Just the day before, a crash wiped bn off the markets and triggered violent clashes between angry investors and police. Individula investors make up 75 per cent of investors in the Dhaka stock market, and they have the most to lose if the market goes down. Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports.

Dhaka stock exchange lost over 300 points in three days. www.shahriar.info (শাহরিয়ারের স্বপ্নবিলাস) Dhaka, Jan 5 (bdnews24.com) — Tota Mian, a vendor who sells fruit in front of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, was livid with anger as agitating investors snatched his two wooden boxes and set them on fire. “They have lost their mind, only Allah knows what they are running after,” said an angry Tota on Wednesday as his fruit boxes were burning into ashes before his eyes. They did so apparently to vent their frustration and anger at the Dhaka stock exchange after its price index lost over 300 points in last three days. “I have lost Tk 4 laks in the last three sessions; I have a family of four and our future is at stake,” said Rafiqul Islam Rakib, who joined the procession and was chanting slogans against the top DSE officials as well as the central bank governor. Hundreds of small investors took to the street as the general index lost 120 points within first half an hour of trading. Though the market recovered soon after the huge slide, investors remained on the street and at one stage some protestors tried to storm the Bangladesh Bank building and the DSE at around 12 PM. Law enforcers swiftly swung into action, foiling their move by using water cannon, teargas and heavy baton. Capital market experts found this incident in front of the central bank alarming. “This is a very bad sign and the investors should not have done this,” said Salahuddin Ahmed Khan, a former DSE chief executive.
